"It's not the fault of rich people that poor people are poor." I heard this statement in a class at Yale today and I've been mulling it over.
Is it the fault of rich people that others are poor? Perhaps not directly. But what I think the speaker of the statement was missing is an appreciation that rich people don't get rich in a vacuum.
Further, poor people are usually born into poverty. And as this study concludes, poverty is tough to escape.
In both cases, I think there are factors both within one's control and those not within one's control.
What do you make of that statement?
