Fit Bits

June 12th, 2012

I was fortunate to be recently gifted a FitBit. I’ve been interested in trying it for sometime now. It was fairly straight-forward to get started and in the name of quantification, I couldn’t help but log my experience:

9:41pm Logged into fitbit.com/start
9:43pm Downloaded the software
While the software was downloading I looked for a empty USB port on my laptop. I had to make a big decision about disabling another device so I could accommodate this new one. I marveled that FitBit had already convinced me to download software to my computer AND displace another device.

9:45pm Software downloaded, I opened up the execution file and it installed the software.
9:46pm A window opened in the software asking for my height, weight, and birth date. I entered the information but when I hit the next button I encountered an error message and had to re-enter my data. No one likes putting in their weight and birth date twice.
9:48pm I entered my email and password.
9:49pm The software informed me that it couldn’t located my FitBit which I had placed on its charger/docking station. So I pressed the button on the device as instructed three times. No dice.

Then I took the device off the docking station and turned it around – thinking maybe I had put the device on the dock wrong. Again, the error did not resolve.

9:55pm It hit me- I had plugged in the docking station’s USB cord before the device drivers installed, so I unplugged the USB cord and re-plugged it in and voila the software found my device.

9:56pm I entered the number that flashed on my FitBit in the appropriate field on the screen. Installation completed and then I hit a button for getting started.

The button sent me to the website and I was asked to register if I was new or enter login data. I paused here. There was no indication on the website that my registration via the installation software was recognized so I wasn’t sure if I needed to re-enter a password. Finally, I chose current user and then I was taken to my dashboard, which oddly had that I had burned 1300 calories. I’m assuming this was calculated based on my resting metabolic rate from height and weight tables but an explanation would have been cool.

I poked around the dashboard but wasn’t sure what to do next. I referred back to the start page. There it said to let the device charge. So I checked on the charge by hitting the button – all charged, then pulled off the device and clipped it to my jean pocket.

9:58pm I was ready to get fit with FitBit. Total time to install was 17 minutes.

I used the device for three days and haven’t used it since.
